Five Top Tips for Happy Hydrated Winter Skin

Winter is officially here and it often brings with it, tight skin, red cheeks and cracked lips, but with some top tips we can ensure you make your way through the season with happy hydrated skin, ready to brave any cold snap the weather throws at us…

#1 – Don’t ignore sun protection:

Not convinced you need sun block in winter…  Let’s get down to the science. Sunlight contains ultraviolet rays including UVA + UVB rays, which can be harmful to our skin and although we are aware of this being a risk in summer, we often forget to protect ourselves in the winter months! During winter UVB rays tend to be weaker, but UVA rays, which can cut through the clouds are very high risk, even on cold, grey days. And although UVB rays are not so strong, when the sun does make an appearance it can reflect UVB rays off of ice and snow, so that means double trouble. So no matter the weather, ensure your moisturiser incorporates an SPF factor of at least 15, alternatively add a layer of sunscreen before you venture out even if it’s a day for hats, scarves and gloves.

#2 – Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate:

As the temperatures drop and we crank up the central heating, your skin will become drier and more sensitive, so upping your hydration game is a must! Swap your morning coffee for a green tea because as well as giving you the comfort of a warm drink it will also provide you with much-needed antioxidants that will help fight the effects of cold winter days. It’s also a good idea to finish off the day with a warm (not hot) bath. Baths are a luxury to winter bodies, providing stress-relieving endorphins and relaxation as well as a great opportunity to hydrate the skin. Apply body lotions and creams straight after bathing, while the skin is still damp, to help to seal in moisture.

#3 – Tweak your daily skincare routine:

If you feel your usual moisturiser isn’t lasting through the day it is likely your skin routine needs tweaking. If you are currently using a lotion then why not try swapping it for a cream?

#4 – Consider your Hair Removal Options:

Consider professional waxing or hair laser removal for your legs because in the winter your skin gets drier, and shaving can irritate this, often giving way to the dreaded scaly shins and “leg dandruff”!

#5 – Treat yourself to a professional skin treatment

Winter is a fantastic time of year to have a professional skin treatment. In winter skin can often look dull, and dry, so a professional facial every three to four weeks, will help to keep your skin clean, clear and hydrated.

Laser treatments such as hair removal or tattoo removal are ideal to have done in the winter as you can keep treated skin covered, and will naturally be limiting exposure to post treatment irritants such as sun, chlorine and salt water. When the sun eventually comes out in the summer you’ll be finished with your treatments, ready to show off the new you!

At the 1192 Clinic we offer a wide range of skin therapies from facials to laser treatment, which will perk you up and help see you through the cold winter months!
